Health:

The health of cattle is very important because it allows for them to have higher productivity (Meat and milk), longer lifespans, and reduced costs for vet visits. 

Common health issues within cows include

  • Bovine respiratory diseases
  • Lameness
  • Digestive blockage (bloating, acidosis, etc.)
  • Heat stress

Signs for a health cow:

  • Appearances (bright, alert, aware, moistened nose, upright ears)
  • Behavior (move around without pain or lameness, reactive, chewing consistency, alert)
  • Production (soft manure, clear urine)
  • Movements (moves easily around, good muscle strength when standing, strong/lean looking bodies)

Signs of a unhealthy cows: 

  • Appearances (sunken flanks, rough coats, nasal discharge, drooling, lethargic)
  • Behavior (depression, isolation, inconsistent breathing, limping)
  • Digestive issues (bloats, stool consistency, or diarrhea)

The hygiene of cattle is important to the animal’s wellbeing because it influences the disease outcome in cattle and the health aspect of the animal.

  • Waste management 
  • Clean environments 
  • Foot care
